History
Garmin launched the original Instinct on 11 October 2018 as a rugged outdoor GPS watch. It was built to the MIL-STD-810G military standard and water-rated to 100 m.
The Instinct 2 followed on 9 February 2022 with a 45 mm case, plus a smaller 40 mm Instinct 2S.
The Instinct 3 series (January 2025) added an AMOLED option for the first time in the line. It came in AMOLED and Solar versions, each in 45 mm and 50 mm, and every model has a built-in flashlight.
What it brought to the industry
Some 45 mm Instinct 2 Solar models offered unlimited battery life in smartwatch mode, with about 3 hours a day in sunlight. Garmin called this a new battery life standard for the brand.
