    The story · Since 2007

    The story of the Breitling Superocean Heritage

    In 1957 Breitling sent two divers' watches into the sea at once, the time-only ref. 1004 and the ref. 807, which Breitling calls the world's first dive chronograph. It later revived them as the Superocean Heritage, and the strap you need now depends on the case: 18 mm on the 36, 20 mm on the 40 and the slim '57, 22 mm on the 42, 24 mm on the old Chronograph 46.
    1. 2007 The Heritage revives 1957 For 2007 Breitling revived the 1957 model as the Superocean Heritage in 46 mm and 38 mm steel cases, rated to 200 m.
    2. 2017 to 2018 Heritage II and a Tudor heart At Baselworld 2017 Breitling swapped movements with Tudor and fitted the Tudor MT5612, renamed B20, to the second-generation Superocean Heritage II, with a ceramic bezel insert, in 42 mm and 46 mm.

    1. 2007

      The Heritage revives 1957

      For 2007 Breitling revived the 1957 model as the Superocean Heritage in 46 mm and 38 mm steel cases, rated to 200 m. Europa Star singled out its bracelets: the plaited steel Ocean Classic and the Ocean Racer rubber strap, both on folding clasps.

    2. 2017 to 2018

      Heritage II and a Tudor heart

      At Baselworld 2017 Breitling swapped movements with Tudor and fitted the Tudor MT5612, renamed B20, to the second-generation Superocean Heritage II, with a ceramic bezel insert, in 42 mm and 46 mm. A third size, 44 mm, followed at Baselworld 2018.

    3. 2018 to 2020

      Surfers take the wheel

      In November 2018 Kelly Slater helped Breitling unveil the Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown to the US market in New York, the first Breitling with a strap made from ECONYL yarn, a regenerated nylon whose sources include fishing nets. In April 2020 the Superocean Heritage '57 capsule went back to the ref. 1004 in a 9.99 mm case with a concave bidirectional bezel, presented as an ode to surfing.

    4. 2025

      Thinner, smaller, flush-fitted

      In June 2025 the next generation arrived in 30 configurations: automatics of 36, 40, 42 and 44 mm and a 42 mm B01 chronograph, down from 44 mm. The new B31 calibre cut the 42 mm case from 14.35 to 12.03 mm, and mesh bracelet and rubber strap now sit flush with the case.

    2025. As Kelly Slater stepped away from professional competition, Breitling released the Superocean Heritage B31 Automatic 40 Kelly Slater, ref. AB31101A1C1A1, with a stamped tropical foliage dial, a caseback engraved "One of 500" and a personal note from Slater; Breitling says he co-designed it.

    2020. Slater's third Outerknown collaboration with Breitling put a copper dial into the Heritage '57 on an ECONYL NATO strap; the version with an 18ct rose gold bezel, ref. U103701A1Q1W1, was limited to 500 pieces.

    2020. The Superocean Heritage '57 Rainbow, with hour markers in graded Super-LumiNova colours, was limited to 250 pieces for Breitling boutiques.

    2018. In November 2018 Kelly Slater unveiled the Superocean Heritage II Chronograph 44 Outerknown at the Breitling boutique on Madison Avenue: black DLC steel case, blue lume, and the first Breitling strap made of ECONYL recycled nylon.

    Generations and strap changes

    1. 2025
      Automatic 36 (A10390)

      The first 36 mm Superocean Heritage, with the Breitling Calibre 10 instead of the B31 used in the larger automatics.

      Breitling lists 18.05 mm between the lugs and a strap tapering 18/16 mm.

    2. 2025
      B31 Automatic 40 (AB3110)

      New 40 mm size with the B31 manufacture calibre, 78 hours of power reserve, 11.73 mm thick.

      20 mm between the lugs, rubber strap tapering to an 18 mm folding clasp, fitted flush to the case.

    3. 2020
      Superocean Heritage '57 (A10370)

      Superocean Heritage '57 (A10370): Capsule modelled on the ref. 1004: 42 mm wide but 9.99 mm high, 100 m water resistance, Breitling Caliber 10, concave bidirectional ceramic bezel.

      Narrower lugs than the standard Superocean Heritage 42: 20 mm between the lugs, tapering to 18 mm, on a steel bracelet or leather strap.

    4. 2018
      Heritage II 44 (AB2030 and A13313)

      Heritage II 44 (AB2030 and A13313): The 44 mm size added at Baselworld 2018; Breitling now lists it as a B20 three-hander and as a Breitling 13 chronograph.

      Both 44 mm versions take 22 mm, like the 42 mm.

    5. 2017
      Heritage II Chronograph 46 (A13312)

      The chronograph of the second generation, a 46 mm steel case with the Breitling 13 calibre and 200 m water resistance.

      24 mm between the lugs, rubber strap tapering to a 20 mm folding clasp.

    6. 2007
      Superocean Heritage 46 and 38

      First generation, Breitling 17 calibre in the 46 mm and Breitling 37 in the 38 mm, dials in black, blue or bronze.

      Sold on the Ocean Classic plaited steel bracelet or the Ocean Racer rubber strap in the dial colour, each with a folding clasp.

    What lug width does the Breitling Superocean Heritage use?

    Breitling Superocean Heritage references use 18 mm or 20 mm or 22 mm depending on the reference and case size, so check yours in the list below. The most common is 22 mm (61 of 96 references with a known width). The Breitling Superocean Heritage ref. A10370, A10370121B1A1 and 11 more take 20 mm (listed by the maker). The Breitling Superocean Heritage ref. AB2010, AB0156161C1S1 and 57 more take 22 mm (listed by the maker).

    Do all Breitling Superocean Heritage references take the same strap?

    No. 4 different lug widths appear across the line, often by case size or generation. Check the reference engraved on the case back or between the lugs.

    What lug width does my Superocean Heritage take?

    It depends on the case. Breitling lists 18.05 mm on the Automatic 36, 20 mm on the B31 Automatic 40 and on the 42 mm Heritage '57, 22 mm on the 42 mm and 44 mm models, and 24 mm on the Chronograph 46.

    The Heritage '57 is 42 mm: does it take a 22 mm strap like the Heritage II 42?

    No. The '57 has its own slimmer case with narrower faceted lugs, and Breitling lists 20 mm between the lugs, tapering to 18 mm, against 22 mm for the B20 Automatic 42.

    What changed in how the 2025 straps attach?

    The 2025 mesh bracelet is thinner and both it and the textured rubber strap now sit flush against the case with no gap, closing on a steel folding clasp; Fratello notes the ends now follow the case shape.

    Is the 2025 Superocean Heritage 36 the same movement as the larger sizes?

    No. The 36 mm uses the Breitling Calibre 10 with about 42 hours of reserve, while the 40, 42 and 44 mm automatics use the B31 with 78 hours.

    What is lug width?

    The gap between the two lugs that hold the strap, in millimetres. A new strap must match it exactly: 20 mm lugs take a 20 mm strap.

    Measure it in 30 seconds

    1. Take the strap off, or look at the back of it: many straps print their width.
    2. Measure the inside gap between the lugs with a caliper or a millimetre ruler.
    3. Round to the nearest whole millimetre. Most watches use 18, 20 or 22 mm.

    Strap, quick release or system?

    Most watches use spring bars, so any strap of the right width fits. Many smartwatches use their own band system instead, such as Apple Watch bands or Garmin QuickFit.
