The story · Since 1999
The F.P. Journe story
- 1999 Journe financed his launch the way Breguet once did: by subscription. Twenty collectors paid in advance for the first Tourbillon Souverain, each numbered on dial and caseback, and that series started the brand in 1999.
- 2003 The first F.P.Journe boutique opened in Tokyo's Omotesando district in 2003, in a building by the architect Tadao Ando, with a lounge, bar and watchmaking library for collectors.
- 2008 The Centigraphe Souverain won the Aiguille d'Or at the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève in 2008, the brand's third after the Tourbillon Souverain in 2004 and the Sonnerie Souveraine in 2006.
- 2018 In September 2018 Chanel took a 20% stake in Montres Journe SA. Journe told his staff that, with no certainty his children would continue his work, he wanted to secure the brand's future; production stayed at about 900 watches a year.
- 2023 In 2023 the brand's own dial and case makers, Les Cadraniers de Genève and Les Boîtiers de Genève, moved into a purpose-built building in Meyrin, in the canton of Geneva.
Firsts and innovations
1999. The Tourbillon Souverain, whose prototype was made in 1991 and which was launched in 1999, is described by F.P.Journe as the world's first wristwatch to combine a tourbillon with a constant-force mechanism, the remontoir d'egalite.
2000. The Chronomètre à Résonance, presented in 2000, was the first resonance wristwatch: two balances that fall into resonance and beat in harmony, an effect studied by Antide Janvier and Breguet in clocks.
