The story of the Panerai Luminor
Sylvester Stallone strapped on a Luminor for Daylight and, by his own account, did not take it off until filming ended; in 2020 that watch sold at Phillips for 214,200 dollars.
Chapters
- 2016 to todaySlimmer for a shirt cuff
The Luminor Due, first shown in 2016, reworked the 1950 case into the thinnest and lightest Panerai cases yet, at 10.5 mm for the 42 mm models. It was meant for wearers who found the classic Luminor too bulky.
- 2005 to 2015A movement of its own
Panerai produced its first in-house movement in 2005, and the Luminor grew into a family of Marina, GMT, chronograph and 8 Days models, including a 47 mm GMT with equation of time.
- 1997 to 2004Nineteen-Fiddy
Distribution went worldwide in 1997, and in 2002 Panerai released the PAM127, a close recreation of the modified Rolex 6152/1 behind its modern identity. Collectors nicknamed it the Fiddy from the 1950 on its dial; the same year Panerai opened a manufacture in Neuchatel.
- 1993 to 1996From the navy to Hollywood
In 1993 limited editions of the Luminor, Luminor Marina and Mare Nostrum were presented to the Italian public. Around 1995 Stallone began commissioning his own Slytech Panerais, and the Slytech Daylight coincided with the filming of 1996's Daylight.
- 1950 to 1992A case cut from one block
The Luminor 1950 case had lugs carved from the same block of steel and a crown guard with a locking lever, made around Rolex movements for Italian frogmen.
- 1916 to 1949Glowing dials for frogmen
Panerai introduced the radium-based Radiomir in 1916 and built a frogman prototype in 1936, after testing Rolex watches for Italian Navy divers. The tritium-based Luminor compound only followed after the war.

2020. Stallone consigned his own Slytech Daylight to Phillips New York with its sharkskin strap, signed letter and Daylight press kit. Estimated at 40,000 to 80,000 dollars, it sold for 214,200 on 12 December 2020.
2002. The PAM127 got its nickname from collectors reading the 1950 on its dial as Nineteen-Fiddy.
