The story of the Rolex Pearlmaster
For three decades Rolex never wrote the word Pearlmaster on a dial: the name lived in the bracelet, five rounded pieces per link closed by a hidden clasp. Every one was cut from precious metal and set with at least 12 stones.
Chapters
- 2015 to 202234mm and 39mm only
By the end of its run the Pearlmaster was offered in 34mm and 39mm only. The original three 39mm launch references left the catalogue quickly, while the 39mm size stayed on.
- 1992 to 2014Bracelets built for stones
The line was defined by a bracelet unique to the model, its wide flat links leaving room for gem-setting. Pieces such as the circa 2014 Ref. 80285 carried channel-set diamonds down the bracelet sides and a diamond-set bezel.
- 1992A grander Lady-Datejust
Rolex launched the Pearlmaster in 1992 as a more lavish take on the Lady-Datejust. It came in 29mm and 34mm, sized for its role as a premium ladies' watch. From the start it was made only in precious metal.

Moments
The Pearlmaster name comes from its bracelet of five rounded pieces per link with a concealed Crownclasp; the word never appears on the dial, which reads Datejust or Day-Date.
A circa 2014 Ref. 80285 in Everose with a mother-of-pearl lotus dial sold for $38,100 against a $15,000 to 30,000 estimate at The New York Watch Auction: XIV.
A Ref. 80285 of the same Everose and lotus design sold for $24,130 at The New York Watch Auction: XII, estimate $20,000 to 40,000.
Rolex rejects more stones than it accepts for the gradient sapphire bezels, and each one takes two weeks to produce.
