The story of the Rolex Land-Dweller
In 2025 Rolex launched its first all-new collection since the Sky-Dweller of 2012, and brought back an integrated bracelet the brand had first tried in 1969. Inside beats a 5 Hz calibre whose Dynapulse escapement parts roll against each other instead of sliding like the Swiss lever used in the brand's other mechanical movements.
Chapters
- 2025 to todaySeen in the Royal Box
At Wimbledon in July 2025, Federer wore the Oystersteel and white gold version in the Royal Box, and days later Leonardo DiCaprio sat next to Rolex CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour wearing ref. 127334. Rolex told Monochrome the collection will grow with new colours and materials.
- April 2025Ten references, one new escapement
Rolex unveiled the Land-Dweller in 2025 as a collection of 10 references in 36 mm and 40 mm, in white Rolesor, Everose gold and platinum. It joined the Classic range between the Datejust and the Day-Date, with 32 patent applications and patents attached to the watch.
- 2023 to March 2025A name filed, a secret kept
Rolex registered the Land-Dweller name in a 2023 trademark application, the same year calibre 7140 appeared in the Perpetual 1908. On 30 March 2025, two days before Watches and Wonders, Roger Federer posted ski photos on Instagram with an unreleased watch on his wrist.
- 1977 to early 2000sThe Oysterquartz years
The Oysterquartz arrived in 1977 with Rolex's own calibres 5035 and 5055, in Datejust and Day-Date versions. Production ran at about 4,000 pieces a year, and an advert paired Edmund Hillary with Reinhold Messner, who climbed Everest in 1978 wearing an Oysterquartz. Its run ended in the early 2000s.
- 1969 to 1972The Rolex Quartz
Rolex first explored the integrated case and bracelet on the Rolex Quartz, a gold watch built around the Beta 21 movement shared by many Swiss brands. Made in 1000 numbered pieces, it was also the first Rolex with a sapphire crystal. Because the movement dictated the design, the Oyster case could not be used.
Worn by
The tennis champion wore the unreleased Land-Dweller in Instagram photos from a ski trip posted on 30 March 2025, a day before Watches and Wonders 2025 began, which press read as the watch's first public appearance. In July 2025 he wore the Oystersteel and white gold version in Wimbledon's Royal Box.
At the Wimbledon men's semi-final in July 2025 the actor wore ref. 127334, the 40 mm white Rolesor model, while seated next to Rolex CEO Jean-Frederic Dufour.
The pianist wore the Everose gold Land-Dweller 36 with diamonds in the launch imagery, which Coronet read as Rolex deliberately debuting the 36 mm size on a slender wrist. These are campaign photographs.
Moments
On 30 March 2025 Federer posted Alpine photos captioned "Alpine mode: on", one hand stirring fondue, with a new Rolex on his wrist. Commenters identified the unreleased Land-Dweller before Rolex announced it.
Calibre 7135 runs at 5 Hz, a first for an in-house Rolex movement, yet keeps the 66-hour reserve of calibre 7140 because the silicon Dynapulse escapement is about 30% more efficient than a Swiss lever.
Because the bracelet attaches through a very narrow gap, Rolex patented an attachment with a spring bar under one centimetre long, held by a screw and protected by ceramic inserts. SJX reports the lug sockets are coated in tungsten carbide.
In July 2025 Federer wore the Land-Dweller in the Royal Box at Wimbledon, and DiCaprio wore one on semi-final day seated beside the Rolex CEO.
