A thesis, a dolphin, a patent
Philippe Stern wanted a useful complication between the simple date and the perpetual calendar. A diploma project with the Geneva engineering school produced a mechanism built from wheels rather than levers, steered by a feeler nicknamed the Dolphin. Its student author, Cedric Fague, joined Patek Philippe.
- 1996 to 2003
Ref. 5035 and its first offspring
The 37 mm ref. 5035 was unveiled at Basel in 1996 and, in 1997, cost roughly CHF 18,300, less than half a perpetual calendar. The 5036 of 1998 added moon phase and power reserve and the first gold bracelet; limited runs followed for Tiffany in 2001 and Wempe in 2003.
- 2004 to 2009
New calibre, new shapes
The tonneau Gondolo Calendario ref. 5135 of 2004 brought the faster calibre 324 and the arched day, date and month windows. Ladies' models, a 39 mm ref. 5146, silicon Advanced Research pieces, the Calatrava-style 5396 and the 5960 chronograph followed within a few years.
- 2010 to 2015
Larger cases and a sports watch
The 40 mm ref. 5205 arrived in 2010 with skeletonised lugs, and the same year the annual calendar entered the Nautilus as ref. 5726. A regulator, ref. 5235, followed in 2011, a steel 5960/1A on bracelet in 2014, and the 42 mm chronograph ref. 5905 in 2015.
- 2016 to today
Steel, travel time, thirty years
By its 20th anniversary in 2016 the complication existed in 21 versions, and the new 5396 was number 22. A steel 5905/1A appeared in 2021 and a Travel Time annual calendar, ref. 5326G, in 2022. In 2026 Swisswatches counted 17 annual calendars among about 160 current Patek references.
✦Presented at Basel in spring 1996, the 5035 was named Watch of the Year by the Swiss magazine Montres Passion that autumn. Juror Nicholas Foulkes later recalled a unanimous decision.
✦A circa 2018 Nautilus Annual Calendar ref. 5726/1A-010 sold for USD 165,100 at the Phillips New York Watch Auction: XII in June 2025.
✦The 2006 ref. 5960 introduced calibre CH 28-520, the first automatic chronograph developed and made entirely in-house by Patek, where earlier chronographs relied on Lemania or Valjoux bases.
